Frequently Asked Questions

What is a passphrase?

A passphrase is a password made of multiple random words instead of random characters. For example, 'correct-horse-battery-staple' is easier to remember than 'X#9kL@mP2!' but can be equally or more secure.

Are passphrases more secure than passwords?

Yes, when done correctly. A 4-word passphrase from a large word list provides excellent security (10^15+ combinations) while being much easier to remember than a random character password.

How many words should I use?

4 words is the minimum recommended for most uses. Use 5-6 words for high-security applications like master passwords or cryptocurrency wallets. Each additional word multiplies security exponentially.

What is Diceware?

Diceware is a method for generating passphrases using dice rolls and a word list. Our generator uses a similar approach with a curated list of common, easy-to-type words.

Should I add numbers or symbols?

It's optional. The strength comes from the number of random words. However, adding a number or capitalizing a word can satisfy password requirements that demand mixed characters.
